Program History

Dolly Parton launched the Imagination Library in 1996 in Sevier County, Tennessee where she grew up to foster a love of reading among the young families there. Through her Dollywood Foundation, the Imagination Library has been replicated to benefit children throughout the world. Over 700,000 preschoolers are currently enrolled in the U.S., Canada and Great Britain.

The Sarasota County Imagination Library began in 2008. It is funded by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County through their LEAF (Literacy Empowers All Families) grant. The Sarasota County Library System and the LEAF community agency partners promote the program and enroll children.

Around 2,500 Sarasota County children receive their free Imagination Library books in the mail each month.
